This morning two things converged for me. One, I began the “Love to the Uttermost: Holy Week with John Piper” reading plan on Youversion. As I sought to catch up and finish on Easter, I read the first 3 days of the 9 day plan. Day 3 addresses Luke 9:51-56 and the fact that Jesus “set his face to go to Jerusalem.” Jesus, knowing all the horror that awaited him, was not merely caught up in a power play that went too far. He purposefully made his way to the place where he would lay his life down.
Later this morning I came across an article from author Randy Alcorn titled “The Sentence Against God.” I encourage you to read the whole thing but I’ve been struck by this one statement:
Some people can’t believe God would create a world in which people would suffer so much. Isn’t it more remarkable that God would create a world in which no one would suffer more than he?
If you’re not sure you agree that God suffered more than any human, again I urge you to read the whole article. But if you believe that then really ponder the greatness of that God who “set his face” for this greatest act of love.
